Three-Person Body Percussion Rhythms

Three-Person Body Percussion Rhythms

Students will learn a rhythmic body percussion pattern for three people. After splitting up into groups, students will perform and record themselves playing along to a backing track in WURRLYedu.

Inspire

Watch the following video featuring body percussion:

How many different ways to make sounds did the students see? Can the recreate any of them?

Practice

Using the attached handout teach the class the three-person rhythm, which is demonstrated in a video shown here.

  • Begin by teaching the whole class each of the rhythms, A, B, and C.
  • Once the class has learned each rhythm, separate the class into three groups, one group for each rhythm. Each group should then practice their rhythm.
  • Once each of the three groups is ready, put the students into three-person groups, one person for each rhythm. These three-person groups should now practice combining the three rhythms.

Record

Once each three-person group has practiced combining the three rhythms, have them record their performance over the WURRLYedu "Basic Drum Beat".

You have to take a deep breath, and allow the music to flow through you.

Reflect

Did all three students stay in time with the drum track? Did they all perform their rhythms correctly? How does it sound having three different rhythms together, rather than just one rhythm at a time?

Take It Further

There are many more body percussion exercises on the website Body Percussion Classroom to explore in further classes.

Materials Needed

iOS, Android, or Chromebook device.

Differentiations

If the students are not confident enough to perform in small groups, then all three groups can combine to form one large group performing all three rhythms at once.

Suggested Assignments

Here's a tip: Try experimenting with different articles of clothing to get varieties of sounds!

What different percussive sounds can you make? Choose a song from the catalog and record your own body percussion pattern over it.
